Deja Vu As Town Get Cwmbran Then County
It was a case of deja Vu as Monmouth Town's Kingfishers were handed a repeat of last year's Cup draw with a home tie with former Welsh Premier winners Cwmbran Town followed by an away clash with Dean Holdsworth's Newport County for the winners.
Town pushed Cwmbran all the way last season losing by the odd goal in seven after extra time at Cwmbran stadium and will be looking to go one better this season to clinch the plum tie at Spytty Park.
The home tie will be arranged for the first week in September and Town Chairman is looking for a bumper crowd to improve Town's chances "It's a great draw for us and I'm sure Cwmbran will bring some supporters so its important that we get a good turn out so they know they're playing away! We know we're good enough to get through then it would be great to take a lot of people down to Newport. I'm proud that we're already one of the best supported teams at Welsh League level in any division and it does make a difference"

The Kingfishers get the Crows…then County!
The Gwent Senior Cup draw has handed Monmouth Town’s Kingfishers a home preliminary round draw against former League of Wales champions and European cup challengers Cwmbran Town. A win will see a visit by Gwent’s premier club Newport County to Monmouth Sportsgound for the first time ever in a competitive fixture. The Gwent Senior cup is by invitation only to Gwent’s premier clubs and the tie against Cwmbran to be played in early September looks sure to draw a bumper crowd particularly given the pedigree of the opposition. Chairman Lee Robson explained what the draw meant for the club “Cwmbran Town were the first League of Wales champions back in the early nineties and managed by a good friend of mine Tony Willcox who sadly passed away a few years ago. They are the only team other than Juventus to play in all European competitions and have a great history and it’ll be fantastic for us to play them in Monmouth. We’ve got a chance to get through and if we do it's Newport County in a cup match in Monmouth. If I could have drawn the fixtures myself I couldn’t have done any better and it’ll be a great experience for our young lads. Can we beat both of them? Why not!”

New Jobs for the Boys... and Girls.... at AGM.
Apart from Robbo being returned as Chairman, Steve East was offically elected as Club Secretary at last Thursday's AGM. Stepping in for Terry Cleaves who stood down after fifteen years will be a hard act to follow but armed with a computer and an eye for detail (among other things ) we're all confident that Steve can do a great job. Big hand for Terry . if you can think of any ways we can honour the club stalwart then send us your ideas.
Andrew 'Lap Top' Lloyd and Dave Walker were elected as assistant Secretaries.
Leslie East was also elected Treasurer of the club and has experience of doing a similar job with another club in the recent past. Sorting out the fag packets and beer mats with figures written on them is a must in this job.
Sharon Oxford was chosen to lead the charge to have proper club events and will be helped by Leslie and Wendy Jeffs (although we haven't told Wendy yet!).
Smudger was elected club captain and will attempt to represent players interests at the club meetings.
National Accolade For Kingfishers - Programme Voted Fifth Best in Wales
If a fairly successful season in the Welsh League was a good start on the pitch the Kingfishers have received national recognition for their off the pitch efforts as the Club Prgramme Tales From The Riverbank was voted overall fifth best out of all Welsh clubs by Welsh Football Magazine.
Hailed as 'outstanding, well designed and very readable' the award is a credit to the club and is a good recognition for all of our efforts to portray a professional and positive image to supporters from the town and our visitors. Its all part of a good experience supporting the Kingfishers!
Well done Ed! (err that's me!)
Alderdice Takes Player of the Year Award. Jack Alderdice was named the Kingfisher's player of the year at a well attended awards evening last Friday. Jack, 20, returned from injury at the back half of the season and was instrumental in adding creative nous and a bit of steel to a struggling Kingfishers midfield. Special mentions also to Aaron Davies, who ran Jack close, and Matthew Bowen who picked up the supporters player of the year while Sam Palmer picked up the players' player of the year.
Ashley Ford received the reserve team player of the season and Alan Powell was voted players' player.
Dan Spence picked up the Young Player of the year and also the under 18's player while Jonty Cornes was the pick for players' player. Well done to all of you and everyone else!
Award Winners announced. Make that 10th Place. Merthyr Saints have been deducted 10 points so that pushes us up a place. Which was nice but obviously not for them.
11th place final finish...The final game has taken place with Penrhiwceiber confirming their promotion with a 6 - 0 win against Cwmamman United which also confirmed our 11th place. (disciplinary issues pending). We would have taken that before the season started so well done everyone. Just to put it in perspective ...its the highest placed any Monmouth Town team has ever finshed; reasons to be cheerful (part One).
DID anyone see the photo in the Free Press of Monmouth Town AFC at Vauxhall in 1909!!! Given that we know that the club existed in 1906 and we didn't celebrate our centenary how about season 2009/10 being centenary year to coincide with that photo. Any ideas welcome.
Telly In Risca. Some great work going on down at Risca United with a good website and some real raw footage from their games on You Tube. Apart from the incredibly one sided reports (and I thought I was bad) and the fact that they didn't show our goals in a 2 - 2 draw it's all good fun, albeit a little Stalinist.
SOME great pictures from the Newcasle Emlyn game taken by a local photographer. Follow the link at www.emyronline.co.uk
